Senior executives and CEOs are accountable not only for their individual successes. They are also responsible for the successes and failures of the business, and that can be stressful. This is why CEO wellness programs are important. A CEO who is not fit and healthy will have an impact on the organisation. What are the best ways to achieve this?
The first thing to do is have a corporate wellness program. But according to the American Psychological Association, successful wellness programs must have key senior leadership involvement or they may fail. Though the reality of participation may differ, clearly an important factor in this is that the executive as its champion must be communicating effectively. If the employees are unaware of it or do not believe that the CEO is serious about it, it’s a lost opportunity.
Risk Management magazine says CEO involvement in wellness is crucial. “On an organisational level, corporate wellness starts with the CEO who either sets the agenda to support the business or doesn’t. This will lead to a leader making the right decisions individually and then role modelling these across the business. As a result, the team, division or , organisation will be able to focus on their wellness as a priority and make good decisions to be at their cognitive, physical and emotional best. This will then mitigate the risk of errors, mistakes and poor performance.
Inc.com says corporate wellness programs can range from the expensive like installing a gym onsite and hiring a wellness coach to stuff that doesn’t cost that much like programs to help people stop smoking, walking programs or aerobics classes. Cross-department teams could earn points over a 12-week period by doing healthy things like drinking a certain amount of water or going for a walk on their lunch breaks.
Presenter Dr Peter Holsman says everyone should try to do at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week. 30 minutes of activity has been shown to maintain good energy levels and overall health.
“You can break it up into two 15 minute sessions or three 10 minute sessions if you are starting to increase your activity levels or time is an issue,’’ Holsman says. “Activities such as brisk walking, working in the garden and going for a swim are popular forms of moderate physical activity. Expect to get lightly puffed but still be able to hold a conversation. If you are too puffed to talk, then you are overdoing it. Vary your activities to help you stay motivated. For example, walking or cycling along a different route adds interest.”
He says aerobic activities can include brisk walking, swimming, playing golf, cycling, gardening, tennis, dancing, aerobics, jogging and team sports. He also recommends resistance training that typically uses weights or exercises to strengthen your muscles and bones. Resistance training promotes the formation of lean muscles. This increases your ability to burn fat and contributes to a toned and trim physique. In addition the amount and percentage of lean muscle mass is a key predictor for living longer.
